No genre gets more people online and blowing each other up more than first-person shooters. Online multiplayer games make great investments, providing hundreds of hours of replayable action. And don't be surprised to find new maps and weapons available for your favorite FPS just weeks after you start playing. While not typically a major focus of these games, the quality of the solo experience has also increased incredibly, with some titles providing mysterious and fascinating locations for you to explore as you shoot bad guys with your AK-47.

Why it's best: A mainstay in any FPS library, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shows off just how impressive the PS3 can be. It’s the gold standard in online multiplayer that other games are compared to, and it even has a solo campaign that can stand up to the competition.... Read Full Review

Why it's a best pick: The beauty of this game is that you can do so much more than just whip out your guns and blow up everything in your path (though you’re perfectly welcome to do so if that’s your cup of tea). With maps created to accommodate up to 256 players online, you really have to know what you’re doing to survive more than a few minutes at a time. But once you learn your role and start functioning as a team player, rather than a one-man army, you’ll find yourself in one of the most rewarding and challenging online experiences....
